Who will I be working for?

We are Next Chapter, a domestic abuse charity that provides free and confidential services to support people who are currently experiencing, or have previously experienced, domestic abuse. We work across Tendring, Colchester, Maldon, Chelmsford, Braintree and Uttlesford.

Formerly known as Colchester & Tendring Women's Refuge, our mission is to provide rapid responses that increase safety for all victims, enabling them to rebuild their lives and create lasting change.

We’re currently looking for a Handy Person to join our friendly team, working 15 hours per week.

What will I be doing?

As a Handy Person, you will help to maintain and repair the interior and exterior of our Refuge buildings and grounds. 

Some of your duties will include: 

- Painting and decorating 
- First line maintenance of fixtures and fittings 
- Carrying out basic plumbing tasks, such as unblocking sinks, traps and waste pipes 
- Assembling and moving furniture and equipment

What do I need? 

To join us as a Handy Person, you will need: 

- Experience of carrying out similar tasks in a handy person role 
- Previous experience of grounds maintenance tasks 
- Experience of using hardware tools and electrical equipment 
- A basic understanding of plumbing systems 
- A good understanding of decorating and repair processes 

Ideally, you’ll have experience of working in a community or voluntary organisation, but this isn’t essential. Knowledge of electrical systems would also be an advantage, as would an understanding of health and safety procedures and precautions, including COSHH regulations.

You may have previously worked as a Handyman, Handywoman, Building Maintenance Operative, Facilities Maintenance Operative, Facilities Assistant, Maintenance Operative, Site Maintenance Operative, or Grounds Maintenance Worker.
